Senator Alan Hays and his family moved to Florida from Kentucky when Alan was four years old. He graduated from Lakeview High School in Winter Garden, then enrolled in Connors State College in Warner, OK where he played football and earned a degree in Drafting and Design. Upon completion of that degree program Alan entered the US Coast Guard where he served honorably as a Dental Technician for four years. He then enrolled in the University of Florida and earned his DMD degree as a member of the Charter Class of the UF College of Dentistry.
Alan, his wife Jeanne, and their daughter moved to Umatilla where Alan enjoyed owning his private dental practice and serving the oral health needs of his family of patients from all over Central Florida.
Leadership has always been a trait of Alan Hays. He was a class officer in high school, co-captain of his football team, president of his class in dental school and held many professional organization leadership positions over the course of his dental career. Various organizations have recognized his legislative leadership and awarded him more than 40 individual awards for outstanding accomplishments.
After selling the dental practice in 2003, Alan successfully ran for election to the Florida House of Representatives where he served with distinction until being elected to the Florida Senate in 2010.
In both legislative houses, Alan was chosen by the presiding officers to chair an appropriations sub-committee overseeing the budget of eighteen state agencies. This current budget is in the amount of $5.9 Billion. After the recession of 2008 hit Florida with a $5 Billion reduction of revenue, Alan guided the reduction of the spending of these agencies to total more than $221 Million. This was accomplished by reducing spending on specific programs, elimination of unnecessary programs, and elimination of more than 1200 positions that were deemed non-vital to the accomplishment of the agency core mission.
Alan has always been active in community civic affairs and an active member of his church. He has been honored by a host of organizations for his legislative dedication and leadership. His service on the Senate Ethics and Elections committee has involved a multitude of issues relating to elections and has given him special preparation for the Supervisor of Elections position in Lake County.
Alan and his wife Jeanne are the proud parents of three daughters and dearly love each of their seven grandchildren. For relaxation, Alan enjoys reading, snow skiing, water sports, golf, and playing with the grandchildren.
