Senator Alan Hays was first elected to the Florida Senate in 2010 representing District 20. He previously served in the House of Representatives from 2004 until 2010.
He is a 1976 charter class graduate of the University of Florida College of Dentistry and is now semi-retired. Senator Hays currently serves in the Senate on the following committees:

- Budget Committee
- Budget Subcommittee on Higher Education Committee
- Criminal Justice Committee
- Reapportionment Committee

Senator Hays has received an “A” rating from the Florida Chamber of Commerce for his pro-business voting record during the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Legislative Sessions. Senator Hays has received the Faith and Family Award from the Christian Coalition every year he has served in the legislature. That same organization recognized then-Rep. Hays in 2008 as an Outstanding Protector of Academic Freedom.
Serving in several positions of leadership in his church and community, Senator Hays is a former trustee of the Sumter Electric Cooperative and presently serves on the board of directors of Larry McFadden ministries in Orlando. He has been an active Kiwanian since 1978, served as district moderator of the Boy Scouts of America and for 6 years served as a Trustee of Lake-Sumter Community College. He is also President of the Charter Class of the University of Florida College of Dentistry and a lifetime member of the University of Florida Alumni Association.Senator
Hays’ recreational interests include golf, snow skiing, scuba diving, reading, and flying. He is an instrument rated private pilot and holds several gold medals in the downhill NASCAR races.
Senator Hays and his wife, Jeanne, live in Umatilla and are the proud parents of three grown daughters and love all five of their wonderful grandchildren.
