Florida TaxWatch calls for $1 billion savings

State Sen. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government, praised the task force recommendations for speeding up disposition of state lands and buildings that are no longer needed -- which TaxWatch said could save $39 million. Hays also liked a recommendation to increase electronic time and attendance records for employees checking in and out at work.

Road named for fallen airman

Surrounded by dozens of cheering friends and elected officials, Marilyn and James Reynolds fought back tears by the sight of a new brown sign on State Road 44 that reads: Captain Jim "Malibu" Reynolds Jr. Road. Looming bad weather didn't stop state Sen. Alan Hays, a retired dentist, from remembering his former patient-turned-pilot.
